CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS

What are circadian rhythms?

Circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioural changes that follow a daily cycle, responding primarily to fluctuating lighting levels in the environment. Sleeping at night while being awake during the day, for example, represents a common light-related circadian rhythm. Circadian rhythms are important in determining your natural sleeping and feeding patterns, as well as other important biological processes including brain wave activity, hormone production and cell regeneration.

How do circadian rhythms affect a lighting philosophy?

Studies have long shown that circadian lighting can boost attention, reaction times and mood. Taking this into consideration, Lighting Controls have updated our EcoLux system to allow circadian rhythms to be incorporated into a lighting philosophy. The system can be designed to control the colour and intensity of DALI type 8 luminaires over the course of a day, specific fixed times or according to an astronomical clock. The timing and lighting colour are fully user configurable.
